Pleasing or Trusting

25 05 2009

If you had the option, would you rather live to please God or live to trust God? For all my life I have lived a life trying to please God, and find myself daily falling short, discouraged, and in bondage of the sin that defined me. It has not been till recently that my way of thinking has begun to change. I remember in college at one point throwing up my hands up in the air, wondering why should I get up and try again, “I am only going to fall short tomorrow.” No wonder so many Christians give up on Christianity through this viewpoint. Currently I am reading this book called “TrueFaced: Trust God and Others With Who You Really Are” by Bill Thrall, John Lynch, and Bruce McNicol. It’s challenged my way of thinking and the way most Christians view Christ and how we should live out our lives. So many Christians live life trying to please God and because we are human, at the end of the night, they find themselves falling short from their sinful nature. This book is helping me discover the difference between striving to please God and trusting God for who I am in Christ. As I live a life trusting in God, I will ultimately please Him. As I read through this book, I struggle and wrestle with living a life to please God or living a life trusting God.

Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God”

Does it have to be either/or? My pick is both.

I’m learning that when you trust in God it leads to pleasing God. One is stemmed from the other. So yes, you have to pick
I highly recommend reading “TrueFaced” by John Lynch

I just might have to check it out. I still don’t think it’s a would you rather question. We should desire to please Him and we can do that by trusting Him. They go hand-in-hand. Funny thing is…I’ve been reading a book called “Trusting God.” It’s by Jerry Bridges and I highly recommend it. I bet we’re learning a lot of similar things.

If you ever choose to read the book Jenni you will understand more about what Ruth is talking about. It all comes down to motive. Is your life motivated by attempting to please God or is it motivated by trusting God? Hebrews 11 says ” and without faith it is impossible to please God”. So one is a by-product of the other. Pleasing God is actually a by-product of Trusting God. So they do go hand in hand but one must take place before the other.

I have a little intro book to the main book of True Faced. Its only like 30 pages long. If you want to learn about all of this in more context, I will bring it out and have Ruth give it to you when you guys hang out. Kind of hard to wrap up some of these things in a short blog ya know.
